A meeting to discuss UNDP’s interventions.
Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for the Management and Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and International Cooperation, Ibrahim Al-Hamli, met Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program Zeina Ali, to discuss the mine center’s challenges and potential solutions
During the discussion, which was attended by Ali Safra, Director of the Executive Center for Mine Action, Al-Hamli spoke about the devastating consequences of mines on citizens, which claimed the lives of scores of civilians under the UN armistice
“During the truce period, hundreds of civilians were killed by the explosion of mines and cluster bombs” Al Hamli said
The Secretary-General of the Humanitarian Affairs Council emphasized the importance of the UN playing its role in providing demining equipment and cluster bombs, which the Executive Center for Mine Action requires to continue its humanitarian role in clearing sites of aggression remnants.
He called on the development program and organizations working in this sector to separate the humanitarian and political aspects of development and to avoid dealing with racism, emphasizing that humanitarian work is to work with humanity, away from racism, religion, and discrimination.
He clarified that the task of clearing mines is entirely humanitarian and has nothing to do with political or military considerations, highlighting the importance of supporting the Executive Center for Mine Action and providing it with the resources it requires to continue its role in saving lives and preventing further casualties
Al-Hamli stated that the council provides the necessary facilities for the work of organizations in Yemen, and he urged the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations to put more pressure on the countries of aggression to enter the impounded mine detectors, as well as to work to provide the necessary support to the mine center to continue its work in clearing mines
Secretary-General of SCMCHA called on UNDP for more efforts and work to continue supporting the mine center, appreciating its efforts in supporting the center during the previous period.
For her part, the resident representative of the United Nations Development Program confirmed that the program seeks to provide the necessary funds to support the mine center to continue its work.
The meeting was attended by the Director General of UN and international organizations, Turki Jameel, the Director of the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Yemen, Pierre Flavier, the Director of Programs at the United Nations Office for Project Services “UNOPS” Khaldoun Salem, and a representative from OCHA, Dania Dalti
